API security misconfiguration and exposed interfaces

Attack scenario

API security misconfiguration and exposed interfaces

Insecure defaults, debug endpoints, broken CORS, verbose errors, or missing security headers expose data and functionality to an adversary.

Why this scenario matters

The risk spans API gateways, application frameworks, containers, cloud, and every environment. The adversary abuses public documentation, stack traces, test accounts, unsafe methods, outdated components, or administrative endpoints.

Organizations need configuration baselines, automated posture controls, hardening, environment separation, safe error handling, updates, endpoint inventory, and continuous exposure testing.

The scenario uses MITRE ATT&CK® as a reference model. It is an expert SecTec interpretation and does not imply endorsement by MITRE.
